A Bunny-Bat?
Moments in the Minivan — By Rebekah on May 29, 2008 at 4:16 pmMy older son, Jack (almost 3) has been the lucky recipient of dozens of books from his older cousins. He is a book-fiend and we probably go through at least 15 books a weekday and more on a weekend. But at that rate of reading, we have exhausted all his age-appropriate books and wind up reading some that are certainly not meant for his age group. He calls these the “No Picture Books” and they include old copies of Aesop’s Fables (one picture per fable; his favorite is the Lion and the Mouse), Fairy Tales from the Brother’s Grimm, and a collection of Uncle Remus stories (which I admit I’ve never even read).
When he chooses books that we really can’t “read”, we usually just work our way through the book, talking about the pictures and pointing out one or two things on each page. Some of his favorites right now are “The Magic Schoolbus” books, which I enjoy because while we’re pointing out things about the pictures I get to read some facts that I probably never learned and certainly wouldn’t remember about animals, geography, weather, etc.
Recently, we were reading a Magic School Bus book, and I pointed out the following picture to Jack:

My comment on the above was: “Oh, look Jack! Ms. Frizzle and Phoebe are pretending to be butterflies. Look at their wings and their antenna. How silly!”
We read on and a few pages later, this page came up:
Jack told me: “Look, Momma. It’s a bunny pretending to be a bat!”
After closer inspection, I had to agree – long ears, plump furry body – looked like a “Bunny-Bat” to me!
